Ontogeny Recapitulates Phenology

This individual Galax plant follows the same bloom pattern as the Galax population as a whole. Just as the flowers on the bottom of the stalk are wide open and the buds at the top tightly closed, the plants at the bottom of the mountain (2700') are in full bloom, while plants further up the mountain (above 5000') are still just budding out. This particular Galax is in mid-flower and is growing about halfway up the mountain.
